This is a fascinating and horrifying story of forced labor in The Congo, starting with King Leopold II's extortion of rubber and ivory, which set the stage for this country's history of corruption and industrial slavery. Today, the "Democratic Republic" of the Congo exports the majority of the world's cobalt, along with other metals and earth minerals, which are foraged by "artisinal" miners who scrabble in the earth to dislodge rocks that contain these elements.
These "exports" are barely paid for in terms of human labor, ending up in the tech devices and cars that the western world is addicted to, upgrading them every few months. Deadly toxins, arsenic being one, are released upon the people doing this "artisinal mining." Of note: The Congo supplied much of the uranium used by the Manhattan Project during World War II.
