Enter a new filmmaker on the "awake" scene. Philippe Carillo's first documentary, Inside the Garbage of the World, is a periscope underwater, you could say, showing us just what the invention of plastic has done to our oceans -- and planet. Not only is plastic trash showing up on remote beaches, birds and fish alike are mistaking it for food. Degraded, oxidized plastic flecks look just like zooplankton, and plastic has taken over the sea: the ratio of plastic to zooplankton is now 36:1. PCMC Films, owned by Philippe and Maxine Carillo, intends to make a series of eye-opening documentaries following this one, each more intense than the last. I met Philippe and his wife when "Garbage" screened in San Diego, and this is my interview with Philippe. Please read the newsletter I wrote after seeing the film, which goes a little deeper into the plastic scenario. If you didn't yet think we're screwed, you may think so now!
